Belgium is a federalist state divided into three regions: Flanders (Dutch-speaking, populated by the Flemish population), Wallonia (French-speaking, populated by the Walloons population), and a German-speaking minority in the east, bordering Germany. Historically, Wallonia was more politically powerful, but in recent years, Flanders has surpassed Wallonia in GDP.
Bart De Wever, leader of the conservative pro-nationalist New Flemish Alliance (N-VA), was sworn in as Belgium's first Flemish nationalist Prime Minister. He heads a coalition government, including the mostly Flemish parties and a French-speaking liberal party.
